Without water, there is literally no life on the planet. It is the most basic resource that everybody needs. Supply is limited but abundant. However, without the proper maintenance and allocation of water, the society will not function. Diseases will be rampant. People will fight over the sources of it.

Hydrology is the study of water and its management. This study deals with all the scientific and technical aspects of available water together with its application in society. The subject mainly includes the assessment of rainfall, assessment of steady flow, flood computations, and calculation of useful life of sources/reservoir.   

Hydrology is not pure science and theoretical as it includes the application itself. Hydrologists deal with water-related problems such as the availability, quantity, and quality of the resource. They are also involved in supplying water for cities, farms, and rural areas. They are also concerned about solving the flooding problems in an area. In other words, their work is generally varied. Every problem that stems from water and its resources is their expertise. 

It may be new to most people and the laymen, but this discipline is vital to us all. The three main reasons why are stressed below:

Bad planning of water allocation will eventually result in scarcity and overflowing of water. Scarcity will lead to drought. Overflowing will lead to flooding. Hydrologists also deal with data regarding the water use of a particular city or rural area. They also assess it against the projected need and the available resource in the reservoirs.

Allocation of the water resources, however, is not as easy as what everybody thinks it is. It’s more than analyzing the water as it undergoes the cycle of evaporation, precipitation, until infiltration and distribution. It’s crucial that hydrologists plan especially with regards to the problems of severe flooding. Lack of drainage and lack of proper reservoir structure are always cited to be the main reasons for such. 

  1. There IsAn Increasing Demand For Water Resource 

Managing a reservoir is said to be a complicated and complex subject and responsibility. With the increasing population of the world, society has the responsibility of accommodating the new bulk of demands. The government is continuously expropriating and converting previous vacant lands to residential homes.  These newly converted residential lots now need a good and reliable water system.

Most areas and cities obtain their needed water from the nearest river, lake, or other bodies of water. It’s essential that the storage capacities, reservoir depths and the inventory itself are accurately measured to avoid the extremes of flooding and shortage. 

  1. Society Needs Proper DrainageFor Health Purposes  

Reliability of local water resources and supplies is a big deal nowadays. It is always the concern of the health departments of every country to ensure the abundant availability of clean drinking water. Pollution is a massive deal as it can undeniably infiltrate even the water flowing to our homes. It is considered the biggest threat to the availability of safe drinking water to be distributed to houses.  

Those in the field of hydrology also deal with water-related problems with environmental engineers. They also measure the acidity of rainwater and monitor the quality of surface water. Hydrologists and environmental engineers do complex chemical laboratory analysis to make sure that the water flowing to our homes are safe despite the changing ecological conditions.

Hydrologists mostly deal with providing the proper and accurate models, computations, and predictions about their assessment of the available water resource. For those who are interested in getting a career in hydrology, the subject involves calculations and Earth science theories. Emphases are in the fields of mathematics, biology, physics, geology, chemistry, and statistics.
